I'm Deji Akala, a web developer based in the UK. My career has been as colourful as my background, having worked as a dentist, teacher, radio journalist, writer, graphic designer and private language school head in Nigeria and Poland.
My adventure in programming and web development started off in Poland with Visual Basic around 1997 before discovering the world of Open Source through Apache, MySQL, PHP and Linux. I played around with phpNuke and phpBB for a while and ended up with a custom CMS based on phpBB which still powers The World of English website today.
My not-so-secret obsession with education is quite understandable because of my background. My parents were both teachers all their working lives and my four siblings and I have at one time or the other been teachers. After discovering the potentials of computing and the web my quest for a web-based learning management system started quite early. So, work on phpEdu began, based on the custom CMS I had written, although this was on and off for several months at a time. Being pragmatic enough to admit that it was going to be an uphill task on my own, another mission began - find an established CMS and continue from there.
Then in 2005, I discovered Drupal and in 2006 stopped looking elsewhere. Work on phpEdu has had its own ups and downs, a mere reflection of my personal life really, but the project is here to stay.
Generally, I enjoy learning, having picked up a wide range of programming skills including Java, JSF and UnoScript (don't ask, it's a bespoke web scripting language) over the years. At the moment, I'm on the Objective-C/Cocoa bandwagon for iPhone development.
The rest of my time is spent on reading, watching Eastenders (yes, it's crazy but I love it!) and supporting Arsenal.
And I've got 2 wonderful sons and a lovely daughter (keep off guys, she's only 7).
